I remember the first time I found DuckDuckGo, I used the feedback button to give an idea. To my surprise, Gabriel personally responded less than an hour later. Sure, he turned down the suggestion, but just the idea that the founder and sole employee (at the time) had actually responded to me in person, definitely gave me a good feeling about the project. In fact, I can say that the friendly environment (email, forums, IRC channel, etc) is what made me especially eager to help out in whatever way possible. :)

A lot of it I was aware of but it did fill in some gaps in my understanding.

I think personally that the reason DDG is doing well against Google is by not attacking Google through technology but people. To compete against Google on their home ground is foolish unless you have unlimited money like Microsoft with Bing, see Cuil as a classic example.Note, I am one of those anonymous people who contributes to DuckDuckGo behind the scenes.
