{"id":31681,"date":"2013-08-08T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T13:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/?p=31681"},"modified":"2016-06-25T06:11:11","modified_gmt":"2016-06-25T13:11:11","slug":"course-cheat-sheet-pre-sell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/course-cheat-sheet-pre-sell\/","title":{"rendered":"How Geordie Wardman got customers to fund his business by paying for a product he didn&#8217;t create yet."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before he saw the light, Geordie Wardman acted like other startup founders. He spent $15,000 to start his own daily deals site, and it looked fantastic. \u201cI went into the market just in love with the idea,\u201d says Geordie, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/guestretain.com\/\">WaveReview<\/a> (formerly GuestRetain).<\/p>\n<p>But what he didn\u2019t know is that a competitor beat him to it. \u201cHere I was totally developing this idea that I thought was great, and here was somebody who&#8217;d been out in the market for at least another eight months,\u201d says Geordie. \u201cAnd in that space they [were well established], and they had a bigger list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deals site was a bust.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Geordie only builds products if he\u2019s 100% sure that he\u2019ll get customers. And he doesn\u2019t invest any of his own money in development.<\/p>\n<p>How? He gets customers to pay upfront for a product that doesn\u2019t yet exist. \u201cI covered all of the development [of GuestRetain] from my pre-sales,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/master-class-pre-sell-2\/\">his Mixergy course<\/a>, he shows you how he did it. Here are three highlights from the course.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Know What Other People Don\u2019t Know<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-31683\" src=\"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/know-what-300x161.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/>Oftentimes, customers don\u2019t know the root cause of their problems.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, when Geordie spoke with hotel owners, they said their biggest problem was \u201cthe feeling that they had just totally been hijacked by these big, powerful review sites,\u201d he says. Bad reviews on sites like TripAdvisor were hurting their business.<\/p>\n<p>So what were those unhappy customers complaining about? Was it customer service, housekeeping, overpriced hotel food?<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that what they were complaining about didn\u2019t even matter. It wasn\u2019t the real reason they left a bad review.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you find the real reason?<\/p>\n<h3><em>Never theorize before you have data<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Ask the five why&#8217;s to get to the root of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis concept [is] about asking the five why&#8217;s to get to the root of the problem,&#8221; says Geordie. \u201cYou don&#8217;t want to be saying why, why, why five times. It&#8217;s more like, \u2018Oh, could you tell me more about that? Well, why do you think that is?\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, Geordie asked hotel guests why they left bad reviews. \u201cThey would say, nine times out of 10, \u2018I wouldn&#8217;t have done this if I felt like the hotel cared, but they didn&#8217;t seem to care,\u2019\u201d he says, \u201c\u2018I would tell the person at the front desk, and nobody seemed to care, so I left a bad review to warn other people.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Geordie realized that if the hotel manager remedied the situation, the unhappy guest wouldn\u2019t leave a bad review.<\/p>\n<h2>2. What We\u2019ve Got Here is a Failure to Communicate<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-31684\" src=\"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/failure-to-com-300x128.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"128\" \/>You have to talk to customers to find out their pains, but that\u2019s easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started doing it, I was fumbling around,\u201d says Geordie. \u201cI couldn&#8217;t even get to the prospect. It took awhile for me to get to the point where I was&#8230;breezing through secretaries, getting to the person that I wanted to get to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how do you talk to customers when you\u2019re just starting out?<\/p>\n<h3><em>Choose a market you can reach<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Begin by tapping your own network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust start by talking to a family member or friend or business associate that will give you the time of day,\u201d says Geordie. \u201cThe first call I did was actually with someone that I had problems with doing my freight forwarding. He&#8217;s constantly losing shipments and&#8230;I call him up and I say, \u2018Okay, do you mind if I just run through some questions with you?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, Geordie had a business idea. \u201cHe said he would pay me $200 a month,\u201d he says. \u201cThat was literally the first idea extraction call that I did, and it was such a great feeling to be like, \u2018Oh my God, this stuff works.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3. Trim Down to the Essentials<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-31685\" src=\"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/trim-down-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/>When Geordie found a problem that customers were willing to pay him to solve, he got real excited about solving that problem.<\/p>\n<p>He worked with a designer to create a PDF mockup of his solution. It was beautiful. It was clickable. And he loved it.<\/p>\n<p>So he was surprised when his developer laughed at his beautiful mockup. His developer said, &#8220;Wait a second. This is your MVP? This is going to be like $100,000. I mean, look at that. The reports alone here [are] going to be like $20,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The problem was that he didn&#8217;t have $100k.<\/p>\n<p>So what did he do?<\/p>\n<h3><em>Solve the core problem<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Geordie went back to his customers and showed them his kitchen-sink mockup.<\/p>\n<p>His customers quickly told him, &#8220;All that other stuff would be nice to have. [T]he core problem [is] me taking control of my reputation. I need you to fix that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So Geordie started stripping out the nice-to-haves until his mockup was &#8220;really bare bones.&#8221; To hold down programming costs, he even cut out an automated signup page and hired a virtual assistant to do that manually.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, he learned that nobody even wanted those features: &#8220;Now after I&#8217;ve been out in the wild for three months, all those features that I had that I had my developer put in his ice box are gone. It&#8217;s like, no, actually my customers don&#8217;t even want that stuff now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by April Dykman.
