Neil Patel is a well-known expert on how to get traffic. But even Neil struggled in the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt [was] my first real business,\u201d says Neil, the co-founder Crazy Egg and KISSmetrics<\/a> and the founder of Quick Sprout. \u201cWe tried to get our site ranked on Google, and we…never really got a ton of leads from the site.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, it was expensive and time-consuming to get leads. \u201cIt took us awhile really to kick it off and start generating revenue,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

These days, Neil knows how to generate a ton of organic traffic. In fact, companies like TechCrunch, Yahoo!, Samsung, and Microsoft call Neil for help.<\/p>\n

In his Mixergy course<\/a>, Neil shows you how to get free traffic using content marketing. Here are three highlights from the course.<\/p>\n

1. Become Internet-Famous<\/h2>\n

\"\"Lots of people start content marketing and focus on the wrong stuff.<\/p>\n

They worry about things like SEO-boosting tactics or the right keywords or the perfect headline formula. \u201cSome people even try to generate traffic by manipulating Google,\u201d says Neil.<\/p>\n

But the bigger problem has nothing to do with keywords and headlines. The bigger problem is that your target audience has never heard your name.<\/p>\n

So how do you get your name out?<\/p>\n

Raise your profile<\/em><\/h3>\n

Write guest posts on sites that share your audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you don’t have time to create content for yourself, go create content on other
\nsites or for people within the industry,\u201d says Neil. \u201cI used to do five guest posts a week. It’s a simple way to generate quite a bit more traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n

To figure out where to guest post, Neil says to use Open Site Explorer to find out which sites have the highest domain authority, the most social shares, and the most active commenters. \u201cIt shows that they’re getting engagement,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

2. Get Off Your Island<\/h2>\n

\"\"When most people start a blog, they think that they can just write a few posts and magically get traffic.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not how content marketing works, says Neil.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn’t matter if you put out a masterpiece, he says. \u201cIf no one reads it, it’s not a masterpiece. You’ve actually got to get out there and spread it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So how do you make sure people will read it?<\/p>\n

\u201dPartner\u201d with other sites<\/em><\/h3>\n

Riff off of content on popular sites, then share your content with those sites.<\/p>\n

For instance, when Neil saw that Moz created a guide for beginner\u2019s SEO, he created a guide for advanced SEO. \u201cI talked about how their guide is great,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you want to learn about beginner’s stuff, read theirs, [and my guide] is covering advanced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, he invited Moz to share his guide with their audience, which they did. \u201cThat drove a ton of traffic,\u201d he says. In fact, the first time Neil used this technique, he got about 150,000 more readers than he got with his previous guide.<\/p>\n

3. Paint Them a Picture<\/h2>\n

\"\"Content marketing is typically associated with blog posts. But if you only write blog posts, you won\u2019t reach a very important segment of your audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve found that not everyone is a text- or numbers-based learner,\u201d says Neil. And that\u2019s especially true of newbies, \u201cwho are typically the largest audience in any segment,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

So how do you reach people who aren\u2019t text-based learners?<\/p>\n

Teach with visuals<\/em><\/h3>\n

Put content into a visual format to make it easier to understand.<\/p>\n

For instance, Neil started turning some of his text-based content into infographics, \u201cand we started seeing a lot more traffic,\u201d he says. \u201cA visual format makes it much easier for anyone to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Neil says you don\u2019t need a big budget to make an infographic. \u201cWith 99designs, you can get one made for $250,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
