{"id":42095,"date":"2016-01-12T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T14:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/?p=42095"},"modified":"2016-06-23T21:26:57","modified_gmt":"2016-06-24T04:26:57","slug":"course-cheat-sheet-grow-your-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/course-cheat-sheet-grow-your-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Master Class: How to grow your audience &#8211; with Joe Pulizzi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you boring your customers to death?<\/p>\n<p>Joe Pulizzi says that\u2019s what most businesses do, whether they\u2019re tiny startups or large corporations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re creating content that&#8217;s no different than anything else out there,\u201d says Joe, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/contentmarketinginstitute.com\/\">Content Marketing Institute<\/a> and author of \u201cContent Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And their audience lets out a collective yawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how you throw some ice water in their faces?<\/strong> (Virtually, of course&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Joe says the first step actually starts with niching down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people are trying to target more than one audience,\u201d says Joe. \u201cThere&#8217;s no way that you can be relevant enough to three audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What about two?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d says Joe, \u201cI could still make the case that it&#8217;s going to fail because two audiences are not relevant enough. <strong>One audience&#8230;a very specific audience and a very specific content niche.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For instance, Joe had a client, a pet supply store, that wanted to blog about pet supplies.<\/p>\n<p>But how was that going to help them differentiate themselves from the big box pet stores, which are doing the same thing? And with a much bigger budget?<\/p>\n<p>So first, Joe helped them niche down. \u201cWhat we found out is they had a strong expertise around a product line for people that like to travel with their pets,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Then, he \u201ctilted\u201d the idea, giving it a twist. \u201cWe formulated the tilt around content specifically for people that like to travel with their pets in recreational vehicles,&#8221; says Joe. \u201c[The pet store] can be the leading expert in the world at that.
